Valentines' Day

'He who has received that light will not be seen, nor can be detained. None shall be able to torment him even if he dwells in the world. Strive to know that holy light'.

Beyond the obvious 'Love & Lovers day' since pre-Christian times and Lupercalia- a Roman spring festival associated with sex and romantic love- Valentine’s Day has mystical appeal and inspirational message for us.

Agnostics dedicate this day to St Valentines who advocated spiritual love and through images and metaphors in his writings. Without expounding sexual abstinence, he desired us to sail into the beyond, beneath surface of physical and social manifestations of sexual union. Love is platonic; it does not belong to desire but to will; not to darkness but light. Beyond overt desire for sexual satisfaction is a love-impassioned longing for a spiritual wholeness that no amount of physical sex can fill.

The physical union is counterfeit of the real union. While the physical union may serve egoistical or social purposes, it no longer serves the spiritual purpose. The choice is settling for the lesser or seeking the greater without the resentment of disappointments that fill our sexual lives.

In this world of suffering, the cycle of birth, death and re-birth is fueled by physical attraction and worldly marriage. In spiritual marriage, love is “Otherworldly” and kindles a fire for the Divine that never goes out. The spiritual connection between love and death is transcendental and belongs to the realm of the archetypal powers of eternity. It is beyond death and birth.

St Valentines inspired people to know the mystery of divine love, love that transcends physical death. The choice is between chain of death and birth or seeking the liberating vision of light, which gives re-birth in the spirit.
